The CALC ROOTS Refugee Mental Health Program provides comprehensive, community-based mental health services for Iraqi refugee, asylee, and asylum seeking children, adults, and families. The major goal of the ROOTS program is to ensure that refugees and asylees receive appropriate mental health services and addresses mental health-related barriers that may delay a successful resettlement.

Outreach and engagement strategies help educate refugees about the value of mental health services, as well as providing linkages to other specialized services. This project offers individual, family and group support, and referral services to Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers who have resettled in southeast Michigan.
Services are offered in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner, conducted by staff from the same culture as the refugee community.

The processes of resettlement in a different country which refugees undergo can place their mental health at risk. Grief, loss and continuing anxiety over family and friends left behind can make it difficult to establish a new life. Some refugees witnessed and/or have experienced trauma, some had no choice but to flee their beloved country. Too often, time to deal with grief is put aside as the needs of daily living take priority.

ROOTS cares for the mental health needs of refugees by addressing the following problems:

  • Impact of war trauma before and after resettlement
  • Acculturation issues from adapting to a new culture
  • Social isolation from others of a similar cultural background
  • Loss of family and social supports
  • Depression
  • Marital Problems
  • Poverty/Practical Needs
  • Substance Abuse
  • Language Barriers
  • Bereavement
  • Discrimination
  • Unemployment, lack of recognition of professional qualifications and a drop in socioeconomic status

We provide the following services:

  • Education and advice to the refugee community to increase mental health literacy and address stigma
  • Support groups for adults, adolescents and children
  • Life skills building activities for adults and youth
  • Learning groups
  • Parenting Classes
  • Referrals to the Chaldean Chamber Foundation and a leading area provider, St. John HealthCare System for assessment, individual or group counseling and treatment
  • Basic Needs Assistance and valuable information about resettling in the U.S. through CALC Resettlement Team
  • Advocacy and education to other agencies and institutions working with the refugee community
