A Dreamy Day

The kids from the Saturday D.R.E.A.M.S. crew had quite the seasonal fun when they attended Long’s Family Orchard in Commerce Township on October 20. The 21 mentors and 25 children made their way from Sacred Heart Church in Detroit to the fun-filled orchard where they enjoyed a petting zoo, corn maze, hayride and donuts and cider. All the kids got to go home with a bag of treats and their own pumpkin.

Thanks to our mentors and volunteers: Vanessa Hajjar, Jessica Rabban, Sara Gabriel, Linda Zetouna, Vanessa Konja, Claudia Sitto, Masar Kirma, Amal Kashat, Jennifer Tomina, Cynthia Sitto, Evonne Mirza, Carl Konja, Bryan Kassa, Brandon Sitto, Jonathan Kenaya, Brandon Setto, Trevor Babbi, Salim Gasso, Tommy Gasso, Lance Sitto and Karen Konja.

Celebrating Thanksgiving

The CALC had their annual Thanksgiving Lunch for the residents of Chaldean Manor in November. Seniors enjoyed turkey — and, of course, yellow Rice, curry and salad. The lunch, sodas and paper products were generously donated by Sabah and Batol Jaboro for the third consecutive year. Dessert, a triple berry truffle donated by Kusay and Raghda Abbo, was enjoyed by the 60-plus seniors who attended.

Every month the CALC has Bingo at Chaldean Manor. Our sincere thanks to all our volunteers: Sally Najor, Bette Babbie, Norma Hakim, Hanaa Shina, Sally Yono, Raghda Abbo, Milad Konja, Batol Jaboro, Suad Kyriakoza and Mary Jaboro.

On November 17, a special meal and mass was held at St. Anthony Nursing Home. Seniors enjoyed Chaldean food, songs by the Mother of God Choir, and mass by Fr. Wisam Matti. Thanks to the volunteers who made it happen: Margaret Butti, Nadira Kano, Nidhal Rassam, Maureen Bacall and Sally Najor.

Tales of Giving

People often wonder: What can I do to make a difference? This past month, three different groups did just that.

• When Rafed Yaldo attended the orientation held once a month for the newly arrived refugees, he stayed to ask how his Tuesday Night Bowling League could help. Before we knew it, the team sent in a $2,000 check. Rafed also donated $500 from his company, John Paul Home Health Care.

On November 13, Clair Konja, LeeAnn Kirma and Julie Garmo went out to Country Lanes to meet the group. Within 10 minutes of speaking, league president Raad Dawood asked for another collection and an additional $829 was raised!

• Mike Housy and Amir Putrus from National Wine & Spirits (NWS) contacted the CALC to learn what they could do for the newly arrived refugees. This idea came to Mike one morning while listening to Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim on the Catholic radio station. Store owners take note: NWS is donating $2 to the Chaldean Federation of America from every case of Hennessy and Johnnie Walker sold!

• In lieu of flowers for the funeral of their mother last month, Mrs. Victoria Shamoun, the Shamoun family asked for donations of sheets and blankets for the refugees. When Mrs. Shamoun’s daughter, Neran Habbo, walked into the storage unit with bags of brand-new items she gave all the volunteers goose bumps. What a wonderful way to keep your mother’s memory alive. Mrs. Shamoun is also survived by sons Salwan and Ghaswan.
